My Flickr Account

My Flickr account name is Thunderphotofan. Click here for some shots of Amsterdam's canals. Click here for some shots of the Botanical Gardens of Münster, Germany; and here for some shots of the Iburg Garden Show in Germany, all taken in July 2018. Finally, here is a small sample of my landscape photography. I hope to upload other albums to my Flickr account in the coming months. In the meantime, many of my photos can be viewed directly on this website.
Lessons of the Lens...
Several years ago I purchased a Canon SLR (semi-professional) camera, but for years I barely used it, and only with the automatic settings. It just seemed too much work to learn how to use the manual settings, so they lay dormant.
One day I went to an Easter lunch at a friend's house and someone pulled out one of the latest Canon SLR's, and took several pictures of the group. I spoke briefly with him about the camera and its settings, and suddenly I decided I had to get one of the latest Canon SLR's and put it to work. I haven't looked back.
Quite apart from the satisfaction of gradually mastering an art, at least enough to take decent-looking pictures (and sometimes, if you're lucky, the odd stunning picture), photography has some unexpected philosophical lessons as well. There are two lessons in particular that it constantly reinforces for me: first, that many moments in life are precious and only come around once. Second, beauty is often right under our nose, but we can only see it if we have "eyes to see." I learnt this after I started to photograph flowers in Philadelphia, and discovered that there was a whole world of beauty right under my nose, in a busy city, that had passed me by because I was too busy to notice it.
